EMT Recertification

From MEFD

This section describes how the State EMT recertification process works. This is separate from the NREMT certification.

State EMT certificates are good for 3 years. NREMT certificates must be renewed every 2 years.

Step 0: Stay Current

Attend all OTEP skills and other required drills. Complete and pass all OTEP quizes. You should track all of your attendance to skill sesssions. You'll need a list when you submit for recertification.

Step 1: Create a SAW account

If you don't already have one you can create your Secure Access Washington (SAW) account at any time. You will need this during your recertification process. https://secureaccess.wa.gov

Step 2: Provide training records to Skagit EMS

Approximately 3-4 months before your certification is set to expire you should get a request from Skagit EMS for copies of all of your training checklists. Send these documents back as soon as possible. If you don't get a request reach out to Skagit EMS and let them know your certification is expiring.

Step 3: Create Renewal 'Service' on SAW

Approximately 90 days before expiration you will get a notification in the mail from the state Department of Health. Follow the instructions and go to http://www.doh.wa.gov/hsqa/Renewals.htm to create your renewal request. This requires you to know your SAW credentials. This will create an 'EMS Online Certification' request.

Step 4: Fill in Renewal

Login to SAW, click 'EMS Online Credential'. In the Credential Information box click the 'Begin Renewal' button. You may NOT begin your renewal if it is more than 90 days until your certification expires. This is a 2 page form with about 10 questions.

Step 5: Track Progress

At this point you need additional electronic signatures. The Agency Supervisor (AS), County Coordinator (CC) and Medical Director (MPD) need to confirm the information you have provided is correct and that all of your ongoing training is completed. They will sign electronically.

Step 6: Completion

With any luck, your recert will be reviewed by the state and completed. Take note of your new expiration date. You will not receive an email, but should get a new EMT certificate in the mail. Provide a copy of your new certificate to your training officer or chief.
