The Warn M15000 winch has a 15,000lb capacity. On 11-24 this winch is set up with wire rope and roller fairleads. We are in the process of moving to synthetic rope. Do not use the winch without proper training.

== Safety ==
It is critical that the path between the monitor and the fire remain clear. Injuries and damage can occur if something is hit by the stream. This is especially critical in unattended use. Consider cones, flagging, and other barriers to alert personnel to the monitors operation.

== Set-up and Use ==

* Remove from apparatus.
* Attach 2 1/2" or 3" attack hose.
* Open legs to their fully locked position.
* Place spikes so they grip the surface as securely as possible.
* Consider securing the monitor with the included strap.
* Adjust the nozzle to the right (stream) position.
* Ensure the water path is clear.
* Using 2 hands, pull the release knob at the bottom of the bail. Once the bail is moved you can release the locking knob. It will lock automatically when the bail is closed.
* The monitor can be moved side-to-side and up-and-down by pushing the nozzle in the desired direction.

Whenever possible, the ground monitor should be used with a firefighter actively controlling the monitor. The firefighter should kneel on the knee pads to help secure the monitor. When attended the monitor may or may not be secured using the strap. Attended use also gives a larger range of motion than unattended mode. To aim the monitor down, push and hold the nozzle at the lower angle. When you release pressure, the nozzle will be automatically directed up to its minimum unattended limit of 20 degrees

=== Unattended Use ===
If necessary the monitor can be set up, aimed, and left running unattended. This increases the chance of the monitor moving on its own or someone entering the fire stream unintentionally. Additional care must be used to ensure fire ground safety.

In unattended use, the securing strap must be used. Without the strap the monitor will move across the surface. The strap can be connected to poles, posts, fences, and other ground anchors. A large loop of large or medium diameter hose may also be used if the hose is charged and the loop is large enough.

The [https://www.phmsa.dot.gov/training/hazmat/erg/emergency-response-guidebook-erg Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG)] is the standard reference for initial responses to [[hazmat]] situations. It provides information on spills of all sizes and includes information on fire suppression, evacuation zones, and product identification. We have at least one ERG in every apparatus. You should be familiar with using the ERG for initial response.

You can download the ERG from their official site or get it as an application for your phone. The ERG is regularly updated. The 2024 edition is the most current as of August 2026.

Working with hazardous materials (hazmat) is part of being a firefighter.

There are official hazmat certifications that you can get: Hazmat Awareness, Hazmat Operations, Hazmat Technician. Awareness and Operations are requirements for a Firefighter 1 certification.

For roadside (and other) spills we use a mixture of '[https://throw-and-go.creationorganics.com/throw-and-go/ throw and go]' and 'floor dry'. Each have their specific uses. To simplify things we carry one or more containers of our spill clean-up mixture on most apparatus. You'll find a barrel of each material at each station.

The mixture is effective at:

* absorbing oil and fuel spills
* reducing vapors
* improving traction

2 parts 'Throw and go' (dirt stuff) to 1 part 'floor dry' (white granules). Use the provided scoop to mix the correct ratio as needed to keep the containers on the apparatus full.
