Rehab kits are carried on most of our apparatus and contain supplies to help firefighter recover during operations.

At a '''minimum''', for each seat on an apparatus, the rehab kit must contain:

* 32 oz of water (typically 2, 16oz water bottles)
* 2 servings of Oral Rehydration Solution (such as 'Liquid IV' pouches)
* 1 apple juice pouch (squeezable)
* 1 snack bar (such as Clif bar)
* 1 hand and face wipe (preferably FireWipes or similar)

When selecting materials for the kits consider:

* Items with longer expiration dates to make them easier to keep up-to-date.
* The focus should be on easily absorbed carbohydrates over protein (which is also important long term, but not as ready a source of quick energy).
* Snack bars with no or limited chocolate. They become messy in warm weather.

11-24 serves a dual role as a BLS rescue unit and Type 6 wildland fire engine. It carries rescue tools for car accidents, including the 'Jaws of Life', and a full set of medical equipment. A fire pump and 300 gallon water tank give it a firefighting capability. This unit was purchased in August of 2006 and is housed at Station 2.

The department uses Zoll AED Pros and [[Zoll AED 3]]<nowiki/>s (added in 2025). These AEDs have both adult and pediatric pads. They also record audio during the CPR process.

==Routine Maintenance==
Each month during routine maintenance the following checks need to be made on the AED:

* Confirm that all items are present.
* Check that both the adult and pediatric pads are in good condition (do not open) and have not expired.
* Check that the ready indicator on the front is a green checkmark. If it shows a red x bring this to the attention of an officer.
* Run the unit through its self-check (see below).

The self check should be done at least monthly.

* Start with the unit powered off.
* Press and hold the On/Off button for 5 seconds. (The unit illuminates the Shock button and issues voice and text messages so that you can verify the visual and auditory output functions. In addition, the screen shows information about the unit’s hardware and software.)
* Confirm that the screen says Unit OK.
* Power off the AED.

==Procedure After A Call==
After the AED has been used, the recording made during the call needs to be transferred to the USB stick and given to the Chief.

* Power off the AED if it is on.
* Press & hold the power button for at least 5 seconds to enter Nonrescue mode.
* When it says UNIT OK press the USB softkey
* Press the NEW softkey to download data since the last download or the ALL softkey to download all data.
* Wait until the DATA DOWNLOAD COMPLETE message is shown and the unit powers off.
* Wait 5 seconds before removing the USB key and replacing it with another. An extra USB key is stored in the Station 1 med locker.
* Give the USB key to the Chief.

The date and time need to be set at least twice a year during changes for Daylight Saving Time. These instructions are also on the card inside the battery compartment.

* Power off the AED if it is on.
* Press & hold the power button for at least 5 seconds to enter Nonrescue mode.
* When it says UNIT OK press the SET Time softkey.
* Press the right arrow softkey to cycle through the fields (year, month, day, hours, minutes seconds), and the + softkey to change the value.
* Press the right arrow softkey until you've gone through every field.
* To save changes press the return arrow/enter softkey to save the change.

In 2025, MEFD has added the Zoll AED 3 to its first due apparatus. The [[Zoll AED Pro]] is still in use on some apparatus and at each station.

The Zoll AED 3 uses the same pads as the Pro model, but has different batteries, interface, etc.

During regular maintenance confirm that the self-check indicator shows a green check mark. If a red x is shown the unit needs to be removed from service until it can be repaired.

Chief Noyes tracks AED pad expiration dates and they should not be checked.

MEFD began using the Fora G20 glucometers in 2024. The main advantage of these glucometers is that each test strip is individually wrapped which reduces errors caused by air exposure over time.

Per the user manual, you can ensure the most accurate you should:

"Rub the puncture site about 20 seconds before penetration." This is because "Stimulating blood perfusion by rubbing the puncture site prior to blood extraction has a significant influence on the glucose value obtained. Blood from the site without rubbing exhibits a measurably different glucose concentration than blood from the finger." --page 8

In Skagit County we use a system to number apparatus, officers, and anyone else who is assigned their own radio. Knowing the system helps you know which resources are coming to a scene and who is talking.

The first one or two digits (before the dash) identify the department. The next digit identifies the station. The last digit identifies the type.

29-11: Structure engine at Station 1 from Anacortes (29).

== Exceptions ==
Medic units have their own numbering. For example the medic units in Anacortes are Med-12, Med-14, Med-16, and Med-18 (backup).

== Island County ==
We mutual aid with Island County units. They have a different system, one used more commonly than ours.

Appearing before the apparatus number will be the actual type of apparatus, ex. engine, ladder, marine, rescue. Following this will be two numbers. First number is Fire District. Second number is Station Number.

For example:

* Marine 22 - North Whidbey Boat (Station 2)
* Engine 81 - City of Oak Harbor Engine (Station 1)
* Tender 54 - Central Whidbey Fire and Rescue Tender (Station 4)
* Rescue 36 - South Whidbey Fire and EMS Rescue (Station 6)

== Law Enforcement ==
Law enforcement uses a different system to identify personnel. Each organization in an area has its own letter. Only the radios belonging to the chief and assistant chief can access law enforcement channels directly, but you may still see or hear personnel numbers, such as 'David5 (or D5) is on scene reporting smoke from chimney'.

MEFD apparatus care Fasplint vacuum extremity splints. These splints are filled with beads and as the air is removed they become rigid. They can be shaped around an injured area prior to removing the air which makes them more comfortable for patients.

11-24 serves a dual role as a BLS rescue unit and Type 6 wildland fire engine. It carries rescue tools for car accidents, including the 'Jaws of Life', and a full set of medical equipment. A fire pump and 300 gallon water tank give it a firefighting capability. This unit was purchased in August of 2006 and is housed at Station 2.
